Damariscotta Heart & Soul Community Planning Damariscotta, ME

Milestones

2008

  • A detailed project work plan was developed; roles of the partner organizations were identified.
  • Project was launched at town’s annual Columbus Day Pumpkin Fest, where residents voted on what makes Damariscotta a great place to live.
  • DPAC members participated in a storytelling training workshop with staff from the Biddeford Heart & Soul Community Planning project; DPAC began to develop a plan for collecting residents’ stories.

2009

  • Held Community Conversations—potluck dinners and storytelling events attended by roughly 60 residents. Attendees listened to stories already collected by DPAC, participated in story circles and began to discuss themes emerging from the stories.
  • DPAC members held Neighbor-to-Neighbor chats to collect stories from some residents on a one-on-one basis; stories are in the process of being posted to Community Almanac.
  •  In October, Damariscotta held a multi-day charrette that focused on the future of downtown. Several hundred people participated and numerous suggestions made, from land use and design suggestions to opportunities to stretch the community's cultural fabric.

2010

  • In April, Damariscotta finalized an extensive charrette report and shared the report for feedback at a public workshop. DPAC will continue to gather feedback on the recommendations made in the report via neighborhood meetings.
  • DPAC worked with local high school students to identify issues of particular concern to youth. The collaboration was a success, and a downtown restaurant offered to continue the effort by working to develop a menu with student-friendly prices.
